Often, better integration comes first. Many organisations already license capabilities they have not switched on, such as conditional access in the identity platform, automated isolation in the endpoint agent, or alert forwarding in the mail filter. Another product adds one more island unless the existing ones are connected.
How to tell the difference
- Name the specific failure you are worried about, such as a compromised account going unnoticed.
- Trace the path from detection to response for that failure and note each manual step.
- For each step, check whether a tool you already own has a feature or API that removes it.
- Only where no current tool can produce or consume the needed signal is a new product the answer.
When new tooling is justified
Real gaps exist. An environment with no centralised logging, or endpoints that run no detection agent at all, has a coverage problem rather than an integration problem. The point is to establish which one you have before spending.
